In 2003 the Conservatives funded - as a pilot - 4 community wardens with an experienced warden manager to start off the service. Despite taking the best part of a year to get things moving, eventually 4 wardens were introduced. Since then no extra local funding has been added to this pilot scheme.
In early 2007, just 2 ASBOs were in force in the entire Borough.
In our surveys Crime always comes top as the issue people want solving. People are worried about increasing anti-social behaviour. Yet at the Council, they have been saving money through vacancies in the youth offending and community wardens team, and failing to expand the CCTV network beyond that which was inherited from the previous administration in 2003.
Cllr. David Burbage, Leader of the Conservative Group said, "Residents tell us that tackling crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour is one of their highest priorities. We agree - and commit to doubling the number of Community Wardens, provide increased town centre coverage - and installing more CCTV cameras where needed. Liberal Democrats have failed to provide the Borough with the alley gating and community policing that residents have been asking for in survey after survey. Putting community wardens in our town centres alongside new Community Officers - as well as existing police constables - will make a big difference"
We Will :
Double the number of community wardens from 7 to 14, providing greater town centre coverage to reduce crime and the fear of crime
Increase CCTV coverage where identified and appropriate
Work with the police and partner organisations to open additional police 'points of presence' for the benefit of the public
Adopt a zero tolerance on littering, graffiti and anti-social behaviour in public places, using a wide range of Council powers
Support neighbourhood policing for local residents to influence the way their area is policed, and campaign for extra Police Community Support Officers
