Cllr Leo Walters said "When it comes to over-development Conservatives have the Borough's best interests at heart. With developers exceeding the allocation of housing for the Borough, it was pressure from Conservative Councillors that caused the Libdems to enforce a policy that allows for the constraint of development."
Cllr Walters further commented, "Local people know best when it comes to local planning, yet the Government are forcing through policies that will promote even greater density development and now have put our Green Belt under threat. Only the Conservatives have the will, locally and nationally, to protect the Green Belt and fight hard to halt the growth of development in the Borough's gardens."
In Maidenhead it has been Conservative Councillors on the planning panel who have been leading the fight against ever-increasing numbers of flats. Here is a recorded vote of one typical application for eleven flats (at 25-27 Braywick Road, Maidenhead) in August 2005. Our motion to refuse had been defeated - this motion was to approve the new flats -
The second motion to be considered was for officer's recommendation. Seven councillors voted for officer's recommendation (Councillors Adams, Baskerville, Mrs Cubley, Hendry, Herlinger, Howes and Ricardo). Four councillors voted against the recommendation (Councillors Burbage, Mrs Kemp, Walters and Wilson).
Here are 7 Liberal Democrat councillors voting through more flats. The Conservative Councillors opposing them are, as is often the case, attempting to preserve the character of our towns and villages.
We will :
Protect the Green Belt, and fight hard using local policies to protect green gardens
Strengthen enforcement against planning infringements
Use local policies to their greatest effect, fighting strongly for Borough residents at any planning appeals, especially for major sites
Seek to introduce environmentally friendly planning policies eg grey water systems, higher energy conservation standards for buildings
Retain the character of our local area, improving the design standards of buildings
