Conservative Cllr Alison Knight set up a backbench working group, inviting members of the Liberal Democrats, to investigate ways of turning the Borough a bit 'greener'. This Group was soon overtaken by an 'official' Sustainability Working Group by the Liberal Democrat Cabinet, although it was given no power.
Conservatives have proposed motions to increase sustainability of new homes through energy conservation, supported the introduction of grey water systems - in short, we will take the Council into the lead on these issues. Our weekly refuse collection means we don't have rubbish strewn about for up to two weeks, and we will keep the current arrangements.
Cllr. Knight said "Through our planning policies we will fight to ensure that new development meets the highest possible standard of energy conservation. We should plant more trees to make the Borough a greener place and work to establish more opportunities for residents to recycle their waste"
We Will :
We will maintain a weekly refuse collection - and plant more trees
Encourage sustainability in planning policy eg grey water systems, and high standards of energy conservation for buildings
Seek to use best practice on environmental issues with other local authorities
Encourage greater recycling through incentive schemes
Give residents more information on Government Grants available for energy saving schemes, such as solar panels
