Adult Services and Housing

Cllr Christine Bateson with older people in Ascot

Elderly people can be cared for through an increasingly varied combination of prevention, technology, family and state care. We want to ensure that nobody 'slips through the net' and suffers alone.

Cllr. Christine Bateson Spokesman on Community Care said, "The Royal Borough has a growing population of elderly people and more residents every year need Care Services. Rather than treat this as a problem we should welcome the fact that people are living longer, healthier lives. But, these trends present new challenges and we must plan to meet them. Money is not the only answer to proving care, we need services that are modern flexible and protect the dignity of our older people."

Cllr. Bateson went on to say, "I am committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and will continue to support the excellent SMILE exercise programme."

Liberal Democrats rejected Conservative proposals to assist HM Forces families find a home when they leave the service - currently they can lose their job and home at the same time and be treated as a 'newcomer' by the Liberal Democrats' housing policy. Gaining a foot on the housing ladder can be very difficult in the Borough due to house prices - we want to work with the Housing Associations to help local people.

We Will :

  • Fully support preventative measures such as SMILE (So Much Improvement for Little Effort) for older people
  • Review the housing waiting list rules to help local people
  • We will work with Housing Associations to provide more opportunities for starter homes to get local people onto the housing ladder
  • Introduce greater rights on local waiting lists for long-standing Forces residents
  • Work with the Health Service to improve arrangements for the discharge of elderly patients from hospital to the community
  • To give priority to and provide accommodation for people with learning difficulties close to where they work
